About Midjourney

Midjourney is an independent AI image generator, used through its website and Discord. It's popular for stylised art, illustration and cinematic, photo-like scenes.

  • A lot of Midjourney output is art or illustration rather than photo-like. Drawn and stylised faces can trip the face analysis, so treat a face-analysis flag on an illustration with care.
  • Midjourney images are often upscaled or edited afterwards, which can change how they look to a detector.

Where it can miss

  • New versions of Midjourney can look different from older ones, and detectors can take time to catch up.
  • Heavy edits, upscaling or filters after the image was made can hide the traces detectors look for.
  • Screenshots and re-shared copies add compression. Very small or heavily compressed images are refused rather than guessed at.

Getting a good check

  • Find the largest, earliest copy of the image you can. A reverse image search often turns it up.
  • Check the original file rather than a screenshot of it.
  • If there’s a face, make sure it’s at least 64 pixels across so the face analysis can run.
