Checkobot

Face swap detector

Face swaps are what Checko's lens was made for. Upload a photo and the face analysis looks closely at the face for the traces swap tools leave behind.

What counts as a face swap

A face swap puts one person's face onto someone else's head and body. Tools range from one-click apps and live webcam swappers to AI image editors that redraw a head on request. Checkobot's face analysis was trained on face swaps from many of these tools.

How Checko looks at a face

The face analysis doesn't just look at the eyes, nose and mouth. It checks a wide crop around the face, taking in the jaw, the neck, the hairline and a little background, because that's where a pasted-in face has to be blended into a head that isn't its own.

How we measure it

We test on frozen benchmarks the model never saw in training, including face-swap tools held out of training entirely.

We'll publish measured catch and false-flag rates, each with its dataset and thresholds, once our current test round is finished. Until then we'd rather say nothing than quote a number we haven't confirmed.

Talking-head avatars and lip-sync videos are a different story. On new engines it misses many of them.

Signs you can check yourself

Good swaps hide most of these, so treat them as reasons to look closer, not as proof.

  • The hairline and jaw edge: a soft halo, a smear or a sudden change in sharpness.
  • Skin that doesn't match: the face a different tone, texture or age from the neck, ears and hands.
  • Light that disagrees: shadows on the face falling one way and on the body another.
  • Small things that don't survive the swap: earrings, glasses arms or teeth that look melted or mismatched.

Getting a good check

  • Use the largest copy of the image you can find. Images under 256 pixels on the short side are refused.
  • The face needs to be at least 64 pixels across for the face analysis to run. Smaller faces are left to the whole-image analysis.
  • If there are several faces, the face analysis checks the largest one. Crop the image to check a different face.
  • Screenshots and re-shares add compression. The original file works best.

Questions

Will it flag a filtered selfie?

Sometimes. Strong beauty filters and heavy retouching can look like AI editing to the model. We're measuring how often that happens.

There are several people in the photo. Which face does it check?

The largest one. To check someone else in the picture, crop the image around their face and check the crop.

Is it free?

Yes. You can check 3 images a day without signing up, or 10 a day with a free account.

Do you keep my photo?

Not on free checks: the image is checked in memory and then discarded, and we keep a fingerprint of the file and the verdict. Paid plans keep the images you check in your private history, with a switch in Settings to turn that off. The privacy page has the details.

Is the verdict proof?

No detector gives proof. The verdict is a signal from two models, each with a known error rate. Use it alongside the usual checks: where the image came from, who posted it first, and what else is in the frame.
