About Meta AI

Meta AI is the assistant built into Meta's apps, including WhatsApp and Instagram, and its own Meta AI app. Its current image model, Muse Image (July 2026), makes pictures and edits photos people upload, for example removing objects or restoring old photos. It replaced the older Imagine with Meta.

  • Meta AI images travel fast through WhatsApp forwards and Instagram stories, which recompress them each time. Get the earliest copy you can.
  • Meta AI can edit photos of real people, so the face analysis matters as much as the whole-image analysis.

Watermarks and labels

Meta adds its own invisible watermark to Muse images, and its apps show an "AI info" label when an image carries industry-standard AI metadata. Older Imagine with Meta images had a visible "Imagined with AI" mark.

Checkobot doesn't read Meta's watermark, and labels don't survive a screenshot or a forward. When a file still carries signed Content Credentials that record AI, Checkobot flags it on those alone.

  • Save the photo itself rather than a screenshot of the chat.
  • Every forward compresses the image again. If Checkobot refuses it as too compressed, ask the sender for the original.
  • Ask where it came from, and search for an earlier, larger copy with a reverse image search.

Getting a good check

  • Find the largest, earliest copy of the image you can. A reverse image search often turns it up.
  • Check the original file rather than a screenshot of it. Very small or heavily compressed images are refused rather than guessed at.
  • If there’s a face, a clear one that isn’t tiny in the frame gives the face analysis the most to work with.
